Zorrotzaurre 1994. The Island and the City that Could (Not) Be

A conversation with Ramón Zallo. Presented and moderated by Santos Bregaña, designer and writer. (Spanish).

Economist and emeritus professor at the University of the Basque Country, Ramón Zallo was responsible for the socio-cultural and infrastructural program of the proposal submitted by Oteiza and the team of architects to the 1994 Zorrotzaurre competition. The session will compare the original proposal with the current urban planning strategy, highlighting similarities and divergences. Beyond architectural and cultural considerations, the project envisioned a city model radically different from the urban transformation that has taken place in Bilbao in recent decades. This discussion will revisit the values put forth at the time and critically assess the evolution of the city and its environment.
