José Juan Barba

José Juan Barba (1964). Architecture critic and Editor-in-Chief of METALOCUS since 1999.
Architect by ETSA Madrid (1991). PhD in Architecture from ETSA Madrid, awarded Sobresaliente Cum Laude for his dissertation “Inventions: New York vs. Rem Koolhaas, Bernard Tschumi, Piranesi” (2004). Received Special Mention in the Spanish National Awards for Completion of Studies (1991). Founded his own practice in Madrid in 1992 (www.josejuanbarba.com).
He has been an architecture critic and Editor-in-Chief of METALOCUS magazine since 1999. Advisor to various NGOs until 1997.
He is currently Associate Professor at the University of Alcalá, teaching Urban Planning, Design Studio, and Architectural Theory and Criticism at both undergraduate and master’s levels, and has also been a visiting professor at numerous national and international universities (Roma TRE, Politecnico di Milano, UPMF Grenoble, ETSA Madrid, ETSA Barcelona, University of Thessaly Volos, UNAM Mexico, F.A. Montevideo, Universidad Iberoamericana Mexico, IE School, University of Alicante, Universidad Europea Madrid, UCJC, Washington, Medellín, ESARQ-UIC Barcelona, among others).
Maitre de Conférences, IUG-UPMF Grenoble, 2013–14. Associate Professor at the School of Architecture, University of Alcalá, since 2003. His work has been published internationally. He regularly serves as a member of academic juries, including the editorial board competition for Quaderns magazine (2011), the Mies van der Rohe Awards (2010–2024), and EUROPAN13 Spain (2015–16). He was invited to participate in the 2016 Venice Biennale as part of the exhibition “Spaces of Exception / Spazi d’Eccezione.”
