Chillida Leku will host Limina, a solo exhibition by Koen Vanmechelen, as part of the official programme of Mugak/ 2025

The International Architecture Biennial of the Basque Country, Mugak/, will include in its official programme the exhibition Limina: Cosmopolitan Chicken Project 30 by Belgian artist Koen Vanmechelen, which will open on 17 October at the Chillida Leku Museum.

This long-term exhibition will transform the museum into a living space where nature, art, science, and architecture converge. Vanmechelen, a key figure in contemporary international art, explores in his work fundamental themes such as identity, cultural diversity, globalisation, and human rights. Limina highlights the value of fertility — biological, creative, and symbolic — that arises through exchange and hybridisation, offering a critical reflection on how we inhabit the world.

Curated by Jon Garbizu and Victoria Collar of Garbizu Collar Architecture, together with Gonzalo Peña Sancho of Kri arquitectura, the exhibition invites visitors to step away from the museum’s conventional route and explore lesser-known areas, where sculptures and artistic interventions coexist with the natural landscape. This experiential proposal challenges disciplinary boundaries and envisions a more open, diverse, and inclusive future.

Limina will also include a public programme of workshops, talks, and participatory experiences, embracing a collective, interdisciplinary, and open approach. This expanded dimension of the exhibition reinforces Mugak/’s commitment to creating spaces for dialogue and experimentation that transcend the limits of art and architecture, encouraging us to imagine new ways of inhabiting the world.
