Fulcrum

Here we have a great example of visual art, if we understand it as what transgresses and transcends, in a sensorial and conceptual way through visual means.

Situated in geometric abstraction, we must not ignore the great conceptual and emotional charge present in all these works. Those are works that bring us closer to sculptural ideas as much as to pictorial ones.

Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002), and Jorge Oteiza (1908-2003), built spaces in different ways, reaching the same goal. Carolina Valls also expresses this goal in her works. The creation of paintings with different shapes than those we are used to, and the geometric volumes that she develops are clear examples of the influence of both sculptors in her work. The sharp forms within the larger volumes reminds us the Aránzazu front face (Oteiza, 1969) due to their interaction with the volumes.

But those are not just conceptual works. They are not cold space constructions like those of Kazimir Malevich (1878-1935). In Carolina Valls ́s work, there is a determining sensory factor, such as color. This gives meaning and humanity to concepts, which although sensitive at their base, are cold in their primary and rational perception. Those are colors that evoke hope and optimism. They are alive, almost fluorescent. They emanate vitality, attention and calm. This chromatic emotionality is closely related to the works of Mark Rothko (1903-1970).

The mixture of these two languages is what gives meaning to these works. They are artificially constructed spaces and volumes, and interrelated. Its interaction with chromaticism is what makes us understand that these works are an example of the union of body and soul. It makes us understand that we are rational animals aware of our existence in nature, and the trail we leave on it.
