Architecture without building: Installation and performance in Donostia

11:30–14:00 | Workshop with students from the University of the Basque Country at the IAE (Led by No Man’s Land Foundation and Maushaus)
In 2019, Yona Friedman wrote:
“The surface of the Earth was originally no man's land: an area not intended for any specific use nor for a specific type of user. It is available for the cohabitation of a multitude of species and individuals.”
This workshop reinterprets Friedman’s intention, according to which architecture must be mobile and adaptable to the needs—including artistic—of those who inhabit it. In this case, the protagonists of the workshop will be the students and faculty from the School of Architecture of the Basque Country.
As an initial approach, participants will become familiar with small-scale materials, testing their possibilities and collectively reflecting at the Basque Institute of Architecture, which will serve as a launch pad for a larger-scale activity that will take place later that afternoon near the Biennial Pavilion.

16:00 | Public installation of the workshop results next to the Biennial Pavilion (in case of bad weather, it will take place at the IAE)
This installation, the second part of the morning workshop, will replicate—together with the students—the dynamics that architect Yona Friedman himself established to interpret human cohabitation on the territory.
According to Friedman, coexistence should be adapted to the real needs of people, granting both humans and the species they share space with greater freedom—without the constraints that conventional urbanism usually imposes on the landscape.
17:00 | Interpretation of the resulting structure by artist Ion Munduate

“Architecture without Building” is an initiative developed in close collaboration with the No Man's Land association. It is inspired by the work and thought of Yona Friedman, and aims to highlight the relevance of utopian thinking in the 21st century as a means to advance the understanding, debate, and design of inhabited territory.
The program consists of a series of actions linked to the three ephemeral pavilions of the Biennial. Through three workshops, the initiative will introduce adult and family audiences to the richness of Friedman’s ideas and work.
In parallel, there will be interviews, talks, and participatory debates open to the general public, promoting collective exchange with members of the No Man’s Land Foundation.
Each of the three workshops will include the participation of an artist whose perspective is not strictly architectural—for example, in fields such as dance, music, or performance—thus expanding the scope and resonance of the proposal.
