During December and January, the exhibition “San Sebastian Old Town and Harbour: Monument Site”, organised by Áncora at the Basque Country Architecture Institute, will be complemented by guided visits with the curators of the show.

The visits will start this weekend and take place every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 19:00 h in Spanish (with the exception of the 21st of December, Feast of Saint Thomas). On Saturday mornings at 12.30h visits in Basque language will be held. All of them will be free of charge for citizens upon registration in the web page www.bienalmugak.eus. The tours will continue until the exhibition closes its doors on the 12th of January 2020.

The show – organised in the framework of the second Basque Country International Architecture Biennial Mugak/ – seeks to celebrate the declaration by the Basque Government of the historic centre of San Sebastian as monument site and to bring citizens closer to its unique features.

This journey around the port and its twenty streets takes us to its most unique buildings through over 330 photographs, drawings and a fragment of a documentary film on life in the Old Town of San Sebastian. “San Sebastian Old Town and Harbour: Monument Site” also includes a 3D reconstruction of a “utopian and failed” project proposed in 1814, with an Old Town spreading radially outward from an octagonal town square, which “met with the opposition of private citizenry”.

The exhibition is the result of a thorough archive research and brings forward new data about the construction process of the city’s Old Town and port. The curators, José María Unsain, Eneko Oronoz and Alberto Fernández-D’Arlas, highlight the “uniqueness” of the historic town centre due to its reconstruction after being destroyed in 1813.

About Mugak/

The Basque Country International Architecture Biennial (Mugak/, the Basque word for boundaries) hosts its second edition with more than 100 activities with the aim of bringing architecture closer to the general public and those who already have a relationship with the discipline. This event is organised by the Department for the Environment, Land Planning and Housing of the Basque Country and seeks to act as a pluralistic, transversal and multicultural meeting point to promote and rekindle dialogue and discussion to redefine new boundaries and shape a more ethical, fair and balanced society.
