Talks

Oteiza in Arantzazu: aesthetic, religious, symbolic and social purpose

This talk will discuss Jorge Oteiza's role in the façade of the Basilica of Arantzazu and the evolution of his sculptural process from the award of the work in 1951 to its final completion in 1969. The change in the project over time reveals the artist's conceptual and symbolic searching and how he put into his work much of his aesthetic thinking about the identification of space and emptiness with the spiritual, as well as the ability of art to generate new symbolic ways of thinking and project them onto society.

This analysis will highlight the artistic and cultural significance of the design by architects Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oíza and Luis Laorga, in which they managed to bring together a large group of artists to use new creative languages to forge an all-round work of art and architecture.
